My First New York

I'm coming up on my 2 year anniversary living in NYC, and "My First New York" would be the perfect gift to myself for surviving the concrete jungle this long. My favorite celeb memory has to be Andy Samberg, although our "mouse problem" isn't nearly as gag-inducing...

Andy Samberg, comedian
Arrived: 1998
"California nature is lovely. New York nature is disgusting. At first, I was really grossed out by it, but by summertime, I remember lying on my couch watching TV with a water gun, and every time a mouse would run out from behind the TV, I would just spray it."

Miike Snow

What: Miike Snow Concert
When: March 28, 2010
Where: The Bowery Ballroom

Strobe lights, stage smoke, white masks. The Miike Snow concert was quite a show. At times I felt like I was in a huge laser tag arena. Other times, the music was so engrossing that I forgot I was in a room with hundreds of other people. The best number had to be Black & Blue. I expected a pretty mellow show, and it was anything but that.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter

I'm getting very excited for the new Harry Potter theme park opening June 18. My summer travel schedule is pretty packed, but I might have to squeeze in a special trip south to see this magical place with all the kiddies.

My Man, Steve Martin

My new obsession: Steve Martin movies. I realize now that I didn't appreciate him enough 20 years ago, although Father of the Bride is an all-time favorite.

I just finished watching Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and does anyone else agree that movie needs a sequel?? If someone knows how I can start a petition to Martin and Michael Caine (and, of course, the glowing Glenne Headly) to reunite for a follow-up film, I will gladly do my part, stand on the street corner, and ask for signatures.

Oscar Gowns 2010

I didn't have a chance to watch the red-carpet arrivals tonight, but I made sure to stop, rewind, and rewind again to scrutinize gowns during the sweeping audience shots. Sandra Bullock looked amazing, SJP has some crazy flyaway hair, and Kristin Stewart looked equally awkward in a floor-length dress as her usual jeans and Converse. Some things never change.

The biggest trend I noticed: pale colors. Rather than black and red, most stars and starlets chose ivory, nude, and peach. The effect added to the old-Hollywood glamour of the night.

(And because he didn't get nearly enough screen time...)

The Gentlewoman

You assume I found this magazine in a dusty bin at my local thrift shop, right? Nope. The Gentlewoman is actually a new Dutch magazine, although I agree it looks straight out of the 70's with it's peach color-blocking, black-and-white photo...and that title! Plus, Phoebe Philo (Celine's creative director) is always an attention-getter, even if she wouldn't have been my first thought for a cover model. I'm definitely going to hit up a few newsstands this weekend to get my hands on a copy.

Times They Are a-Changin'

I don't work near Columbus Circle anymore, but I still love this 1938 photo from the New York Public Library archives. The statue in the center is still the same, but that's about it!
